With Friday’s scoring average nearly five strokes over par (74.845), the “Monster” lived up to it’s billing. However, several players were able to go low and make a strong move up the leaderboard, including DryJoys enthusiasts J.B. Holmes (DryJoys Tech), Ben Curtis (DryJoys Traditional - MyJoys) and Jeev Milkha Singh (DryJoys Tech). J.B. holds the 36-hole lead going into the weekend with Curtis, who tied for the low round of the championship with a 3-under 67, just one shot behind. Singh continues to battle a brutal foot injury but you would never know watching his solid play. He’s in a large group of players three shots behind Holmes at +2. It was a wild day one at the 2008 PGA Championship. Similar to the other majors, you need to take advantage of the course conditions when they’re more receptive to scoring like the morning was yesterday at Oakland Hills. Two players who seized the opportunity to go off in the morning were FootJoy players Robert Karlsson and Jeev Milkha Singh who tied for the lead at 2-under. Similar to The Open Championship a few weeks ago, conditions became more difficult in the afternoon as the wind kicked up, the course firmed up and weather delays forced play to continue on Friday. What will day two bring? I guess we’ll have to tune in to find out!

FootJoy player Robert Karlsson demonstrated great poise during the first round, rallying from a double bogey at the first to go on and shoot a 2-under 68. Karlsson actually rebounded with three consecutive birdies and five over his next seven holes before struggling a bit on the back nine. One Player to Watch at the PGA

August 06 2008 03:32:13 PM · Add Comment

Karlsson PGA practiceOkay, so a European hasn’t won the PGA Championship since Scotland’s Tommy Armour in 1930. But here in New England, stats like that are meaningless since 2004 when the Red Sox did what no pro sports team had ever done before in rallying from a 3-0 deficit in the ALCS. So that’s why we’re ignoring that bit of history and picking Robert Karlsson (right, Classics Tour style #51112, StaSof glove) as one player to watch at the PGA. Well, that and the fact that he’s the only player to finish in the top ten in all three majors this year - The Masters (T8), U.S. Open (T4) and The Open Championship (T7). In fact, the Big Swede hasn’t finished outside the top 20 since March, a run that includes six top tens on the European Tour.

He’s on an incredible run right now, one that has locked up his spot on Nick Faldo’s European Ryder Cup squad. I expect that to continue at Oakland Hills, so keep an eye on the Big Swede this week…

PGA Club Professionals at Oakland Hills

FootJoy will be the #1 shoe at the PGA Championship just as it has been at all the previous majors and PGA Tour events this year. While you should keep an eye on FJ players you know, like Vijay Singh, Adam Scott, Zach Johnson and Lee Westwood, you might also want to keep an eye on the PGA Club Professionals who are in the field. Below is a list of FootJoy players who qualified through their performance at the 2008 PGA Professional National Championship, led by the winner, Scott Hebert (see story about Scott, who’s playing in his home state this week, here).
